Lo-Fi House rose to prominence around 2016, with artists like DJ Boring, Ross From Friends, and DJ Seinfeld blending nostalgic samples with a dream-like, back to basics deep house sound.

This was the antithesis to big room, polished commercial house, with producers and labels embracing the DIY spirit and intentionally rough, stripped back sound. This is a genre that doesn’t take itself too seriously (as evidenced by some of the ironic DJ names) and there has been some backlash against the scene from industry insiders, including this Fact Magazine article from 2016.

Despite this, the influence of the subgenre remains strong, with Lo-Fi YouTube channels like Shall Not Fade and Slav remaining wildly popular to this day. The number of releases under the umbrella of Lo-Fi House may have significantly slowed compared to its peak, partly due to it being largely dancefloor unfriendly, but it has launched a number of DJs into some of the biggest names on the UK club scene. Below we revisit some of the subgenre’s finest contributions.

DJ Boring – Winona

Undoubtedly the defining Lo-Fi House track, this minimalistic song helped really propel the genre into the house music mainstream back in 2016 and now has over 9 million plays on YouTube.

Ross From Friends – Talk To Me You’ll Understand

The quintessential Ross From Friends track and the one that helped launch his now illustrious production career. This hypnotic track doesn’t get old.

Palms Trax – Equation

This 2013 track from British born, Berlin-based Palms Trax helped launch his now illustrious career.

Baltra – Fade Away

A perfect example of the bittersweet beauty of Lo-Fi House, Baltra’s finest work combines melancholic lyrical sampling and adds a hint of acid, making this a Lo-Fi classic.

DJ Seinfeld – These Things Will Come To Be

DJ Seinfeld is one of the pioneers of Lo-Fi House and this is possibly his finest work. The way the track builds is somewhat atypical for the genre but the dreamy nostalgic vibe and that perfect voicemail vocal is very much in keeping for the sound.

Mall Grab – Can’t (Get U Outta My Mind)

It’s easy to forget that Lo-Fi House is how Mall Grab first found fame. This 2016 release combines a catchy lyrical sample with a characteristically hypnotic groove.

Subjoi – Something About You

Continuing the theme of Australian producers in this list, this deeply groovy anthem draws you in right from the start.

DJ Poolboi – Like We Were The Last Two People On Earth

Possibly the most emotive track on this list, this melodic masterpiece has a different feel to your typical Lo-Fi House track, helping garner it over 4 million plays on YouTube.

Laurence Guy – Saw You For The First Time

The title track from Laurence Guy’s 2017 debut album, this is a journey through perfection. Moving away somewhat from the raw and distorted typical Lo-Fi sound towards a jazzier and soulful vibe, this is a real treat for the ears.

Harrison BDP – Decompression

Being the third most popular upload to the Lo-Fi YouTube channel Slav is no mean feat, given the competition. Decompression continues to build throughout its 8 minute play time, subtly introducing new elements.

Computer Data – Healing

This 2020 release from San Francisco native Computer Data has all the necessary components of a successful Lo-Fi House track; catchy vocal sample, crisp hi-hats, rolling bassline and a whole heap of nostalgia.

DJ ÆDIDIAS – Real Friends

Sampling Kanye West turned out to be a masterstroke for DJ ÆDIDIAS. Who would have thought Kanye’s vocals could be reinvented in such a way on this Lo-Fi gem.

Subjoi – The Way I Feel

Another track that really had to be in this list, The Way I Feel is a treat, combining jazzy deep house with the rawness of a Lo-Fi production.

DJ Boring – Love’s A Crime (Edit)

The YouTube trend of matching Lo-Fi House to grainy VHS footage works especially well here, with couples dancing to the groovy bassline and chopped up vocals almost perfectly in time.

Ross From Friends – Bootman

If anyone is deserving of a second entry on this list, it’s Ross From Friends. Released on the same 3-track EP as Talk to Me You’ll Understand, this may not be quite as well known, but it still captures his production style perfectly.
