Club Culture Conversations: Ryan McCall

In the second entry to our interview series, we sat down with Scotland based Trance and Techno DJ/Producer, Ryan McCall. We talk biggest inspirations, getting support from Fish56Octogon, the scene in Glasgow and plenty more.
Thanks for chatting to us, could you introduce yourself for those that don’t know?
Yeah so my name is Ryan McCall, I am a multi genre DJ and producer from a wee town called Dunoon in Scotland 🏴 It’s about an hour and a half from Glasgow give or take.
I love loads of genres but mostly trance, techno and house. If I was to describe my sound I would say it is definitely more on the fast paced/euphoric side, with a bit of bounce on top haha. I’ve never really liked the idea of being confined to just one genre and you can really hear that in my sets.
Who inspires you as a DJ or has had the biggest influence on you?
The biggest influence on me wanting to become a DJ would need to be Carl Cox!! That guy is the goat in my eyes! Just an absolute legend and has been at the forefront of the dance music scene for such a long time. I remember when I was just a young kid, my dad showed me one of his tapes “FACT” and he used to tell me all these cool stories about him mixing on 3 turntables and being called the three deck wizard back in the 90s and from there I was just absolutely fascinated by him and inspired to learn more about the culture as a whole! I find it really cool how he has changed over the years coming from the hardcore rave scene to then playing house and techno but still managing to stay on top at all times.
When I got the chance to hear him for the first time at Creamfields back in 2018, I was just blown away! It was a very humbling experience to be honest!! Like most young arrogant djs I always thought I was a pretty decent DJ, then I saw him live and I was like awwww man I ain’t shit hahaha!! It was straight back to the drawing board.
Your track ‘Give it to me bby’ has gotten plays and shoutouts from some huge DJ’s from Fish56Octogon to UBERJAK’D to being featured on Danny Howard’s radio 1 show, how does that feel?
AWWW that’s another inspiration by the way FISH56 that guy is a fucking legend!! He’s another one that’s really pushing the boundaries and playing sets with multiple genres! That guy inspires me a lot too and he has shown so much support on that track!! He DM’d me when I was sitting in work saying he had drone footage of him and Ben Hemsley playing it during their B2B. I was literally just sitting in work on the phone speaking to customers trying not to completely loose my shit hahaha!! He’s also a really sound guy, he’s given me loads of great advice over the last year or so and always takes the time to reply and give you his honest opinion on stuff! He’s just a proper down to earth dude! The man just absolutely loves the music and you can tell from his videos he’s really passionate about what he does!

What’s the Glasgow nightlife scene like at the moment?
So I’ve always said this and I don’t care what anyone says and I know there are gonna be folk that will be like “ aww what about Berlin and aww London “ but I swear to god on a good night Glasgow is as good as anywhere in the world, with clubs like Subclub, La Cheetah and Berkeley Suite to name a few, but unfortunately like most places in the UK, the clubbing scene as a whole has really changed since Covid and we are really starting to see it with clubs closing down all the time now! I think the big festival style events with a bunch of big name line ups just seems to just be completely taking over the whole scene and it is a real shame to see tbh, I feel there is a lot of really talented DJs/producers out there that are getting overlooked at the moment because of it.
What is your favourite place to party outside of Glasgow?
There’s actually been a few places that some people might not even expect to be honest! I went a club called SWITCH in Southampton to see Sven Vath a few years back and that’s a night that’s always kinda of stuck with me. The atmosphere and energy there was unbelievable! And I remember the sound system just being absolutely incredible!
But for me if we are taking the best of the best it has to be IBIZA! I went to the island for the first time back in 2022 and I was just completely mesmerised by the place! I remember just being in the middle of the dancefloor in DC-10 and thinking to myself “this is what I want to do for the rest of my life” and from then on I’ve just been completely focused on music and nothing else.
What record are you really into right now?
Aww how long you got? So many good tracks out right now but one I can’t get enough of is Ben Hemsley’s track “ Tidal” I think it came out at the tail end of last year it’s like a ten minute long-format masterpiece!!! Just like how trance was produced back in the day.

Dream B2B?
My dream B2B at the moment would need to be FISH56Octagon, we both have the same “multi genre” approach to our sets. He seems to be playing a bit more on the harder side these days and me a bit more on the bouncy side, but we both have a massive love and appreciation for trance, techno and house so I am sure we could cook up something interesting haha, would definitely need to be a longer set though so we could go through the paces! Would maybe need 3 or 4 hours for that one.
Finally, what have you got in the pipeline?
Can expect a ton of new tracks to come in 2026 and also a couple tracks you actually might not expect from me! possibly 1 or 2 in a different genre/sound than usual so yeah keep an eye out for them! And yeah just gonna keep on do what I am doing, just get the head down and keep making tunes and enjoying the whole process of it all!
It’s a very exciting time ❤️
